About Chi Delta Alpha

Mission

The founders of Chi Delta Alpha created a mission statement to establish the focus of the sorority. It is now recited at every meeting, keeping the founding spirit alive. It is as follows:

"We, of Chi Delta Alpha, united in the bonds of sisterhood, pledge always to be dedicated to the community through unselfish service."

History

This history is excerpted with permission from founding president Angi Ma's diary.

Initially the sorority was called Alpha Kappa Gamma. Alpha Kappa Gamma was a national honorary leadership sorority in Virginia and West Virginia. The first meeting was

Thursday, May 19, 1966

and only two people showed up. After the meeting they wrote invitations to the next meeting on

Thursday, May 26, 1966

.  At the next meeting, 18 out of 32 girls showed. The first advisor was Miss Howze, head resident at Eggleston Hall.

Tuesday, October 11, 1966:

Pat Porcella and Angi Ma wrote up the new letters of the sorority. "Chi Delta Alpha was chosen for its English acronym (backwards). The letters mean: (A) Always (D) Dedicated to the (X=C) Community."

Thursday, October 13, 1966:

Pat and Angi spent from 1:30-3:20 working on the XDA constitution.

Sunday, November 6, 1966:

Chi Delta Alpha's first executive board: PRESIDENT: Angi Ma, VICE PRESIDENT: Diane Murphy, SECRETARY: Barbara Stover, TREASURER: Jenene Eversoe, HISTORIAN: Sharon Reynolds. (Pat Porcella married over winter break and became Pat Abbitt)

Wednesday, February 22, 1967:

XDA constitution was passed. "My dream has come true." XDA became the first women's service organization at Virginia Tech.

Wednesday, April 19, 1967:

In the Music lounge, XDA had its first pledge tea. 27 girls showed up and about 24 people pledged.

Tuesday, May 5, 1967:

"This is one meeting I remember very well. As each candidate's name came up, the sisters discussed the person. One candidate, who was being considered, was not very physically attractive and was about to be blackballed. I pointed out that we were responsible for judging the sincerity and the potential as a Chi Delta Alpha sister as well as enthusiasm and 'good heartedness' - not to pass judgment on physical appearance not in our control for we were not a social sorority. Her name was passed, much to my pleasure."

Monday, May 15, 1967:

"Prepared for initiation of Chi Delta Alpha's first pledge class. 9pm, War Memorial Chapel. It was simple, beautiful, and moving." (Founder Angi Ma left Tech to transfer to the University of Southern California and to get married in September 1967, becoming Angi Ma Wong.)
